Gather these items first. Having them ready makes the form quick, calm, and worry-free.
Eligibility
Are you eligible?
Six quick conditions to check.
The ESTA program is available to citizens of countries in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program (VWP), for stays of 90 days or less.
Documents
Five things to keep within reach.
Lay them out on the table before you sit down to begin.
Valid E-Passport
Your passport must be electronic (e-passport) with a digital chip — valid for at least six months beyond your planned stay (some VWP exemptions apply). Must be in good condition with legible information.
Contact Information
A current, accessible email address and phone number. Your email will be used for application communications and status updates.
Travel Itinerary
Travel dates, flight information, and U.S. accommodation details. At minimum, the city and state where you'll be staying.
Employment Information
Your current employer's name, address, and your job title. If you are not currently employed, be prepared to indicate your status.
Emergency Contact
Name and contact details of an emergency contact person, either in the United States or your home country.
A Few Important Things to Remember
An approved ESTA does not guarantee entry to the United States. Final admission decisions are made by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the port of entry.
If you have previously been denied a U.S. visa, refused entry, or overstayed a previous visit, you may not be eligible for ESTA and may need a visa instead.
The ESTA is for short-term visits only. To study, work, or stay longer than 90 days, you'll need an appropriate visa from a U.S. embassy or consulate.
All information provided in your ESTA application must be accurate and truthful. False information may result in denial and could affect future travel.
Passport Requirements in Detail
Your passport is the most critical document. The passport number, issue date, expiration date, and personal information must be entered exactly as they appear in the machine-readable zone.
E-passports contain a small integrated chip with biometric information — identified by the small electronic chip symbol on the front cover. All VWP travelers must use an e-passport.
If your passport will expire before or during your trip, renew it before applying. The ESTA is linked to your passport, and a new passport requires a new ESTA application.
